RESUMO

ABSTRACT: Nunes, JP, Blazevich, AJ, Schoenfeld, BJ, Kassiano, W, Costa, BDV, Ribeiro, AS, Nakamura, M, Nosaka, K, and Cyrino, ES. Determining changes in muscle size and architecture after exercise training: One site does not fit all. J Strength Cond Res 38(4): 787-790, 2024-Different methods can be used to assess muscle hypertrophy, but the effects of training on regional changes in muscle size can be detected only using direct muscle measurements such as muscle thickness, cross-sectional area, or volume. Importantly, muscle size increases vary across regions within and between muscles after resistance training programs (i.e., heterogeneous, or nonuniform, muscle hypertrophy). Muscle architectural changes, including fascicle length and pennation angle, after resistance and stretch training programs are also region-specific. In this paper, we show that the literature indicates that a single-site measure of muscle shape does not properly capture the effects achieved after exercise training interventions and that conclusions concerning the magnitude of muscle adaptations can vary substantially depending on the muscle site to be examined. Thus, we propose that measurements of muscle size and architecture should be completed at multiple sites across regions between the agonist muscles within a muscle group and along the length of the muscles to provide an adequate picture of training effects.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare the effects of four resistance exercise orders on muscular strength, body composition, functional fitness, cardiovascular risk factors, and mental health parameters in trained older women. METHODS: The intervention lasted 63 wk. Sixty-one physically independent women (>60 yr) after completing a 12-wk resistance training (RT) preconditioning phase were randomized into four different exercise orders groups to perform 12 wk of RT: multijoint to single-joint and upper- to lower-body, single-joint to multijoint and upper- to lower-body, multijoint to single-joint and lower- to upper-body, and single-joint to multijoint and lower- to upper-body. This was followed by a 12-wk detraining period and another 12-wk RT in which exercise orders were crossed over between MJ-SJ and SJ-MJ conditions. Body composition (dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry), muscular strength (one-repetition maximum tests), functional fitness (gait speed, walking agility, 30-s chair stand, and 6-min walk tests), cardiovascular risk factors (glucose, triglycerides, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, C-reactive protein, advanced oxidation protein product, total radical-trapping antioxidant parameter, and nitric oxide), depressive (Geriatric Depression Scale) and anxiety symptoms (Beck Anxiety Inventory), and cognitive performance (Montreal Cognitive Assessment, Trail Making, verbal fluency, and Stroop test) were analyzed. RESULTS: After the final training period, all groups presented significant improvements ( P < 0.05) in almost all analyzed variables (muscular strength, body composition, functional tests, blood biomarkers, and mental health parameters), without significant difference among exercise orders. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that RT exercise orders in which MJ, SJ, upper, or lower-body exercises are performed first have similar effects on health parameters in trained older women.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: Nunes, JP, Marcori, AJ, Ribeiro, AS, Cunha, PM, Kassiano, W, Costa, BDV, Aguiar, AF, Nakamura, M, Mayhew, JL, and Cyrino, ES. Differential responsiveness for strength gain between limbs after resistance training in older women: Impact on interlimb asymmetry reduction. J Strength Cond Res 36(11): 3209-3216, 2022-The present study compared strength responses between preferred (PREF) and nonpreferred (N-PREF) legs in older women. Muscular strength was measured unilaterally using an isokinetic dynamometer and was analyzed for reproducibility scores, acute performance, and responsiveness to a resistance training (RT) program. One hundred eleven women (aged ≥60 years) performed 12 weeks of whole-body RT (3 times a week; 4 lower-body exercises). Reproducibility scores (intraclass correlation coefficient ≥0.920; following test-retests in part of the sample at pretraining; n = 19), average acute performances, and average strength gains (PREF = ∼6.9%; N-PREF = ∼7.2%) were similar between legs (p > 0.05). However, the individual analyses showed that some subjects were considered responders to strength gains in 1 leg, whereas nonresponders in the other. Nonetheless, when considering the responses in all strength tests, most subjects (91%) were considered responder to at least 1 measure. In addition, it was observed that the strength ratio between PREF/N-PREF legs was altered for those who presented some asymmetry at baseline, as the limbs became more symmetrical in all strength measures after the RT. In conclusion, we observed that some older women may have different levels of strength between legs; however, a traditional 12-week RT program with bilateral exercises can reduce such asymmetry by inducing greater strength gains in the weaker leg.

RESUMO

Novel 4,5,6,7-tetrahydropyrazolo[1,5-a]pyridine-fused meso-tetraarylchlorins, with different degrees of hydrophilicity (with methyl ester, hydroxymethyl, and carboxylic acid moieties), have been synthesized and their photophysical characterization as well as in vitro photocytotoxicity assessment against human melanoma and esophageal and bladder carcinomas was carried out. An integrated analysis of the photosensitizers' performance, considering the singlet oxygen generation data, cell internalization, and intracellular localization, allowed to establish relevant structure-photoactivity relationships and the rationalization of the observed photocytotoxicity. In the diacid and monoalcohol series, chlorins derived from meso-tetraphenylporphyrin proved to be the most efficient photodynamic therapy agents, showing IC50 values of 68 and 344 nM against A375 cells, respectively. These compounds were less active against OE19 and HT1376 cells, the diacid chlorin with IC50 values still in the nano-molar range, whereas the monohydroxymethyl-chlorin showed significantly higher IC50 values. The lead di(hydroxymethyl)-substituted meso-tetraphenylchlorin confirmed its remarkable photoactivity with IC50 values below 75 nM against the studied cancer cell lines. Subcellular accumulation of this chlorin in the mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, and plasma membrane was demonstrated.

RESUMO

Investigation of novel 4,5,6,7-tetrahydropyrazolo[1,5-a]pyridine-fused chlorins, derived from 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrin, as PDT agents against melanoma and esophagus cancer is disclosed. Diol and diester fluorinated ring-fused chlorins, including derivatives with 2-(2-hydroxyethoxy)ethanamino groups at the phenyl rings, were obtained via a two-step methodology, combining SNAr and [8π + 2π] cycloaddition reactions. The short-chain PEG groups at the para-position of the phenyl rings together with the diol moiety at the fused pyrazole ring promote a red-shift of the Soret band, a decrease of the fluorescence quantum yield and an increase of the singlet oxygen formation quantum yield, improving the photophysical characteristics required to act as a photosensitizer. Introduction of these hydrophilic groups also improves the incorporation of the sensitizers by the cells reaching cellular uptake values of nearly 50% of the initial dose. The rational design led to a photosensitizer with impressive IC50 values, 13 and 27 nM against human melanoma and esophageal carcinoma cell lines, respectively.

RESUMO

Calculating resistance-training volume in programs focused on muscle hypertrophy is an attempt to quantify the external workload carried out, then to estimate the dose of stimulus imposed on targeted muscles. The volume is usually expressed in some variables that directly affected the total training work, such as the number of sets, repetitions, and volume-load. These variables are used to try to quantify the training work easily, for the subsequent organization and prescription of training programs. One of the main uses of measures of volume quantification is seen in studies in which the purpose is to compare the effects of different training protocols on muscle growth in a volume-equated format. However, it seems that not all measures of volume are always appropriate for equating training protocols. In the current paper, it is discussed what training volume is and the potentials and shortcomings of each one of the most common ways to equate it between groups depending on the independent variable to be compared (e.g., weekly frequency, intensity of load, and advanced techniques).

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious and contagious disease, with a chronic evolution that is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, as it is considered a chronic disease among the aged because it can cause sequelae and result in impaired lung capacity and thus contribute to a clinical picture of worse prognosis it is interesting to study the relationship between TB and frailty syndrome and functional capacity in the old age. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the functional capacity of elderly people with pulmonary TB sequelae treated at a pulmonology service in Belém-PA, and to investigate the occurrence of frailty in this population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a crosssectional study with the quantitative-correlational method, conducted from August to November 2017 at the physiotherapy outpatient clinic of the João de Barros Barreto University Hospital, Belém/PA. Frailty by the Tilburg Frailty Indicator (TFI) instrument and functional capacity by the "ADL-Glittre Test" (TGlittre) were evaluated. The "Spearman correlation" between TFI and TGlittre was used. P-value was adopted≤0.05. RESULTS: The average age was 68,37 ± 6.01years, 66.7% were female, all individ-uals were literate, the majority with incomplete primary education (45.8%). The presence of frailty was 70.5% (95% CI 48.9-87.4), with a female predominance (82.4%). The average time on TGlittre was 5,77 ± 1,71 minutes. There was a moderate positive correlation between TFI and TGlittre (p=0.42, p= 0.03). CONCLUSION: This study identified frailty and functional impairment in the elderly with pulmonary TB sequelae, with a high prevalence of frailty compared to other Brazilian studies with the elderly population, besides presenting a moderate positive correlation between functional capacity and frailty, suggesting that these aspects de-serve special attention in rehabilitation programs for functional maintenance or recovery in this profile of patients.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Many factors may influence the magnitude of individual responses to resistance training (RT). How the manipulation of training volume and frequency affects responsiveness level for muscle mass gain in older women has not been investigated. AIMS: This study had the objective of identifying responders (RP) and non-responders (N-RP) older women for skeletal muscle mass (SMM) gain from a 12-week resistance training (RT) program. Additionally, we analyzed whether the N-RP could gain SMM with an increase in weekly training volume over 12 additional weeks of training. METHODS: Thirty-nine older women (aged ≥ 60 years) completed 24 weeks of a whole-body RT intervention (eight exercises, 2-3×/week, 1-2 sets of 10-15 repetitions). SMM was estimated by DXA, and the responsive cut-off value was set at two times the standard error of measurement. Participants were considered as RP if they exceeded the cut-off value after a 12-week RT phase, while the N-RP were those who failed to reach the SMM cut-off. RESULTS: Of the 22 participants considered to be N-RP, only 3 accumulated SMM gains (P = 0.250) that exceeded the cut-off point for responsiveness following 12 additional weeks of training, while 19 maintained or presented negative SMM changes. Of the 17 participants considered to be RP, all continued to gain SMM after the second 12-week RT phase. No significant correlation was observed between the changes in SMM and any baseline aspect of the participants. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that some older women are RP, while others are N-RP to SMM gains resulting from RT. Furthermore, the non-responsiveness condition was not altered by an increase of training volume and intervention duration while RP participants continue to increase SMM; it appears that RP continue to be RP, and N-RP continue to be N-RP.

RESUMO

Nunes, JP, Costa, BDV, Kassiano, W, Kunevaliki, G, Castro-e-Souza, P, Rodacki, ALF, Fortes, LS, and Cyrino, ES. Different foot positioning during calf training to induce portion-specific gastrocnemius muscle hypertrophy. J Strength Cond Res 34(8): 2347-2351, 2020-The aim of this study was to compare the changes in gastrocnemius muscle thickness (MT) between conditions such as which foot was pointed outward (FPO), foot was pointed inward (FPI), or foot was pointed forward (FPF). Twenty-two young men (23 ± 4 years) were selected and performed a whole-body resistance training program 3 times per week for 9 weeks, with differences in the exercise specific for calves. The calf-raise exercise was performed unilaterally, in a pin-loaded seated horizontal leg-press machine, in 3 sets of 20-25 repetitions for training weeks 1-3 and 4 sets for weeks 4-9. Each subject's leg was randomly assigned for 1 of the 3 groups according to the foot position: FPO, FPI, and FPF. Measurements with a B-mode ultrasound were performed to assess changes in MT of medial and lateral gastrocnemius heads. After the training period, there were observed increases in MT of both medial (FPO = 8.4%, FPI = 3.8%, and FPF = 5.8%) and lateral (FPO = 5.5%, FPI = 9.1%, and FPF = 6.4%) gastrocnemius heads, and significant differences for magnitude of the gains were observed between FPO and FPI conditions (p < 0.05). Positioning FPO potentiated the increases in MT of the medial gastrocnemius head, whereas FPI provided greater gains for the lateral gastrocnemius head. Our results suggest that head-specific muscle hypertrophy may be obtained selectively for gastrocnemius after 9 weeks of calf training in young male adults.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The rest interval between sets can affect the responses to resistance training. Thus, the purpose of this study was to compare the effects of different rest intervals (RI) on volume, density, and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) when adopting a crescent pyramid (CP) system. METHODS: Twenty young women (21.1±2.6 years, 1.59±0.06 m, 58.5±9.3 kg) participated in this study. All participants performed three experimental sessions of the leg press exercise in 5 sets until voluntary muscular failure at 60%, 65%, 70%, 75%, and 80% of one-repetition maximum (1RM). A randomized and crossover design was used so that in each session one of three RI (RI-1 = 1 min, RI-2 = 2 min, and RI-3 = 3 min) was tested. RESULTS: The participants performed a significantly larger volume in the RI-3 (12820±3134 kg) when compared to RI-1 (10367±3053 kg) condition (P<0.05). The volume did not differ between RI-2 and RI-3 (P>0.05). The density was higher (P<0.05) in RI-1 (43.1±12.7 kg/s) when compared RI-2 (25.6±5.8 kg/s) and RI-3 (17.7±4.3 kg/s). The RI-2 presented higher density compared to RI-3 condition (P<0.05). The RPE was not different between the three conditions (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The use of 2 minutes of rest between sets allowed the performance of a high volume-load and density of the session in young women. In addition, the three experimental sessions provided a high perception of effort.

RESUMO

The intensity employed in the agonist-antagonist paired-set (AAPS) system may influence neuromuscular performance due to increased fatigue and decreased antagonist coactivation. However, it is not yet known whether performing submaximal repetitions at different intensities (i.e., wit h out m uscle failure) negatively affects agonist muscle performance. The aim of this study was to verify the acute effect of the AAPSsystem performed at different intensities with submaximal repetitions. 20 trained m ales in resistance training (RT) (21.8 [3.1] years; 76.9 [9.7] kg; 1.7 [0.0] m; 24.3 [2.6] kg/m2 ) participated of this investigation. All the participants were allocated in a randomized order in one of the two AAPS configurations: high-load (HL) or low-load (LL). In the HL condition, the individuals were submit t ed to one set of eight repetitions at 75% of one-repetition maximum (1RM) in the knee flexion (i.e., antagonist), followed by 75% 1RM knee extension (i.e., agonist) exercise until momentary concentric failure. In t he LL condition, they performed one set of 12 repetitions at 50% 1RMin the knee flexion, followed by knee extension at 75%1RM also until momentary concentric failure. Both experimental conditions p resented similar values for the number of repetitions, without significant difference (p= 0.66, ES= 0.15). Thus, our data suggest that the adoption of AAPS system without an increase of the antagonist fatigue and consequently no reduction of coactivation, acutely, may not lead to increased p erfo rm an ce o f target musculature during a resistance exercise session...(AU)

The aims of this study were: (i) to analyze the relationship between the performance of different measures of muscular strength, and (ii) to identify which measurements present a greater relationship with an overall strength score. Sixty older women (aged 69 ± 6 years) were submitted to muscular strength measurements from isotonic, isokinetic, and isometric tests. An overall-strength score was generated with z-scores of the values obtained in all tests. Interquartile intervals were created for each measure and the overall-strength score. Pearson's r (0.463-0.951, p < 0.05) and Cronbach's α (0.500-0.966) suggested that subjects had relatively similar strength performance compared to their peers in the different tests. Greater associations were observed between tests for similar tasks. In addition, strong-magnitude associations were revealed between all the tests and the overall-strength score (r = 0.710-0.806; α = 0.760-0.846). Factor analysis identified that only two principal components may be sufficient to explain the strength of the sample. All strength measures had high loadings (0.716-0.916) on a common factor with 1 component. The associated eigenvalue with 2 components was 6.8 (84% of the variance). The present results support the phenomenon of the generality of strength in older women. Although greater correlations were observed for tests performed at the same joint, movement, or type of muscular action, the eight tests satisfactorily represented a measure of general muscular strength cross-sectionally.

ABSTRACT: Microporous bioceramics of calcium phosphate and biphasic hydroxyapatite and tricalcium phosphate beta (HA/TCP- β) in the form of microporous granules biomaterials are research subjects and stand out as bone substitutes in biomedical application. The biphasic bioceramics are biocompatible, bioactive, osteoinductive and promote osseointegration when applied in vivo or through simulated. Another aspect of such differential solubility bioceramics is associated with the capacity that these biomaterials exhibit when applied in biological environment, enabling the gradual release of calcium and phosphate ions to the biological environment they are absorbable and promote neogenesis of new bone tissue. The biphasic bioceramics of calcium phosphate also have promising applications in traumatology in the repair of injured bone and controlled release of drugs in the bone structure treatments. The performance of these biomaterials as bone substitutes and controlled release of drugs, are associated, their physical, chemical, morphological and surface. The aim of this study was to make morphological, microstructural of biomaterials by the technique of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), physics with X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Arthur method for determination of open porosity. The theoretical density of biphasic biomaterials was determined by theoretical method of biphasic concentrations. Finally, we conducted evaluation of osteogenesis and osseointegration behavior of different biomaterials of calcium phosphates in vivo tests on sheep. In vivo tests were performed on tibias of sheep up to of 03 months. The biomaterials implanted were hydroxyapatite (HA), tricalcium phosphate-β (β-TCP) and biphasic compositions as HA/TCP-β in rates: 80/20, 20/80, 70/30 and 30/70. Eight crossbred Texel sheep, with 12 months of age and average weight of 30 kg (±5 kg) were used, in which were produced three bone defects in the tibia, four of these defects were filled with biomaterials, and two by bone fragments (autograft), as control group. The animals were euthanized at 03 months after implantation of biomaterials. After euthanasia, the tibias were collected for evaluation using the scanning electron microscopy technique (SEM). The results show that the microporous biomaterial granules are formed by an irregular morphology with grain size between 200 μm and 500μm, another finding was microporous interconnected microstructure of biomaterials. The result showed that the open porosity of the biomaterials exhibit porosity greater than 68%. The theoretical density was relatively similar between the granulates biomaterials of calcium phosphates and suggest good capacity of osteogenesis for all biomaterials, with the biphasic absorption of the biomaterial introduced 20/80 and more rapid bone formation when compared with other biomaterials evaluated in study.

The objective was to analyze the relationship between restrained eating, bulimia symptoms and feelings of burnout. This is an exploratory research with a cross-sectional design developed with young male sportsmen. The sample was selected in a non-probabilistic way, being composed of 328 male athletes. The Eating Attitudes Test subscales were used to evaluate restrained eating and bulimia symptoms. The Athlete Burnout Questionnaire (ABQ) was used to assess feelings of burnout. The two-tailed partial correlation was conducted with the premise of relating the EAT-26 and ABQ subscales. It should be noted that body fat percentage and age were statistically controlled. All data were processed in SPSS 21.0 software, adopting a signifi cance level of 5%. Regarding the relationship between the EAT-26 and ABQ subscales, we identifi ed the following points: a) the subscale "Diet" showed a statistically signifi cant relationship with the "Physical and Emotional Exhaustion" (r = 0.22; p = 0.01) and "Devaluation of Sporting Modality" (r = 0.24; p = 0.01)subscales, which was not revealed for the subscale "Reduced Sense of Sports Achievement" (r = 0.11, p = 0.23) and; B) the "Bulimia and Food Concern" subscale indicated a signifi cant relation with all ABQ subscales [Physical and Emotional Exhaustion (r = 0.31, p = 0.01), Reduced Sense of Sports Performance (r = 0.20, p = 0.01) and Sports Mode Devaluation (r = 0.29, p = 0.01)]. It was concluded that the restrained eating and the bulimia symptoms were related to some feelings of burnout....(AU)

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between competitive anxiety and heart rate variability (HRV) in swimming athletes. A total of 66 volunteers (41 male and 27 female) who swam the 400-m freestyle in the Brazilian Swimming Championships participated. Thirty minutes before the 400-m freestyle event, the athletes answered the Competitive Anxiety Inventory (CSAI-2R) questionnaire, then underwent anthropometric (body weight, height, and skinfold thickness) and HRV measurements. Then, at a second meeting, held 3 h after the 400-m freestyle event, the athletes returned to the evaluation room for HRV measurement (Polar® RS800cx, Kempele, Finland). Multiple linear regression was used to evaluate the relationship between competitive anxiety and HRV. The multiple linear regression was performed in three blocks (block 1: cognitive anxiety, block 2: somatic anxiety, and block 3: self-confidence), adopting the forward model. The results indicated a significant association between cognitive anxiety (p = 0.001) and HRV. An increased magnitude of the association was observed when somatic anxiety was inserted in the model (p = 0.001). In contrast, self-confidence showed, which was inserted in block 3, no relationship with HRV (p = 0.27). It was concluded that cognitive and somatic anxieties were associated with the HRV of swimmers. Athletes with a high magnitude of cognitive and/or somatic anxiety demonstrated more significant autonomic nervous system disturbance. Practically, psychological interventions are needed to improve anxiety states that are specific to perform well, and to improve HRV.

Bone replacement is often required in veterinary clinics and hospitals routine, even because fractures, bone tumors or any orthopedic disease that entail in bone loss. In this sense, biomaterials capable of promoting this substitution, avoiding the use of bone grafts or transplants have been searched. The aim of this study was evaluated the osteoregenerative capacity of biomaterials in different compositions, implanted in sheep's tibia. Eight female, mongrel sheeps, 12 months old, weighting 28,5±7,4kg were obtained for this study. Three bone defects, 6mm each, in both tibias, a total of six bone defects, were produced, being four of them treated with four different types of biomaterials and two with autogenous bone grafts, as a control group. The biomaterials implanted were: hydroxyapatite (HA), beta-tricalcium phosphate (TCP-β), hydroxyapatite/beta-tricalcium phosphate 60:40 (HA/TCP-β 60:40) and the nanocomposite hydroxyapatite and alumina (HA/Al2O3 5%). The animals were allocated in two groups: Group 60 (n=04), in which the animals were euthanized sixty days after the implantation of the biomaterials and Group 90 (n=04), in which the animals were euthanized ninety days after the procedure. Were performed radiograph images on the preoperative period, immediate postoperative and at 30, 60 and 90 days of postoperative period, to excluded any previously disease or postoperative complications that could compromise this research. After euthanasia, the tibias were collected for macro and microscopic evaluation, which was accessed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optic microscopy...
